8. The Buddy System Model
For
some time I have encouraged job seekers and career changers to
create a micro social support system of two people --- "Buddies"
or "Collaborators". Recently I have discovered additional
uses of this interdependent social support system.
Scuba
Diving.
Scuba diving
has one of the lowest accident rates of all sports. The training
and certification programs focus on safe practices to optimize
enjoyment and minimize accidents --- which can be life threatening.
The buddy system provides an interdependent social system for
mutual protection. To protect against the worsening of a difficult
situation, one scuba diving rule is that you always dive with
a buddy.
While on a
job search and attending large "networking meetings"
--- especially when you are new at it --- it is of great benefit
to attend with your "buddy".
Like all effective
small problem-solving groups, they work best when they have agreed
upon 'ground rules'. Some of the best ones for job search buddy
systems are:
Set individual
and mutual 'stretch' goals.
- Plan your
activities and agree when you will exit.
- Introduce
your friends and acquaintances to each other.
After the event, in a debriefing, some additional ground rules
are:
- congratulate
each other,
- share
information, personal learning's and plans for immediate follow
up with specific new acquaintances, specific kinds of risk taking
at the next large event,
- give each
other positive feedback and encouragement
- brainstorm
how you will improve your individual and buddy system performance.
